Facilities Management : Sprouting as a Profession

With the introduction of computer terminals (an electromechanical machine that used for entering data and displaying from a computer system) at workplaces in the 1960s, the need for managing IT systems and networking became a major necessity. An efficient means to manage those major necessities was firstly introduced by Ross Perot of Electronic Data Systems (an information technology company in the USA) which is known as the foundation of Facilities Management and this was when the term "Facilities Management" was introduced for the first time.

Though the term Facilities Management was introduced a decade ago it was in the late 70s that the need for such a profession emerged in the business world. After the introduction of computer terminals at work workplaces both Herman Miller and Steelcase (both are well-known office furniture manufacturers) bought up the idea of "system furniture" which deals with office landscaping and space planning, which was not understood by the upper management of businesses at that time.

So, in order to create a market opportunity for their new furniture system as well as to acknowledge their clients regarding the management of office environments Herman Miller Research Corp. hosted a conference in December 1978 on Facility Influence on Productivity at Ann Arbor, Michigan and at the conclusion attendees to the conference formed an institutional body called Facility Management Institute(FMI) as a sprout of parent company Herman Miller Inc. where it became the first formal organization to shape out the profession of Facilities Management.

Despite the fact that FMI created a platform to establish Facilities Management as a profession, being an offshoot under the name of Herman Miller Inc. makes it difficult to stand alone as an independent profession. Therefore in the year of 1980, another conference was hosted under the leadership of George Graves (1924-2015) and formed an association called the National Facility Management Association (NFMA) which became International Facility Management Association (IFMA). Hereafter Facility Management was introduced as a new management science and professional body to the corporate world and the past three decades saw the advancement of the profession that it reached the level of the recognized profession around the globe.
